OUR COMPANY HISTORY
Charles (Chuck) Stevinson literally grew up in the automobile business, spending much of his youth working at the vocational trade school established by his parents in 1922, in Kansas City, Missouri. A great number of auto body repair people and mechanics began their careers at this school during its many decades of operation. The Stevinson Auto and Electrical School was also one of the very first trade schools in the country to train the disabled, achieving a high level of success in this field.
Mr. Stevinson learned the many aspects of automobile repair and maintenance during these years, eventually becoming a full-time instructor after his graduation from the University of Notre Dame in early 1949. During these years he helped to teach hundreds of vocational students, gaining experience in dealing with all kinds of people and their particular needs.
After several years working in his parents' business, Mr. Stevinson's own growing family caused him to seek greater opportunities elsewhere. In this pursuit, he joined an acquaintance in establishing a new Chevrolet dealership in nearby Raytown, Missouri in the latter part of the 1950's. Chuck acquired a small ownership interest in the business and took on the responsibility for the dealership's service operation, but it was soon necessary for him to help with automobile sales as well. Although he had a flair for business and a strong desire to succeed in the venture, Chuck's ownership interest was purchased by the majority partner. This unexpected change led him to work as an automobile salesman for another Kansas City auto dealer, while Mr. Stevinson looked for his next business opportunity.
In 1958, Mr. Stevinson purchased a Cadillac and Chevrolet dealership in the small Missouri town of Warrensburg. Within a few years, the illness of one of his children caused Chuck to seek out a drier climate in which to move the family. A friend working for the Chevrolet Motor Division told him of a small dealership in Golden, Colorado which was for sale. A purchase was arranged, the Missouri dealership sold, and the family packed up and moved in 1962. This was the start of Chuck Stevinson's remarkable Colorado business career; one that exceeded three decades and resulted in the creation of several successful and highly regarded business enterprises.
The modest Chevrolet store in the center of Golden was successful enough to support the family of nine, which later grew to eleven, including eight sons and one daughter. The demands of both family and business kept Mr. Stevinson challenged, but in 1970 the business expanded with the acquisition of a small dealership in Lakewood. More than just an expansion, this move is significant because it was our first venture into the import automobile business. Stevinson Toyota, Inc. grew dramatically and achieved a national reputation for sales and service excellence.
In 1989 Toyota Motor Sales USA set out to implement a new luxury division called Lexus. It was at that time that Kent Stevinson became the youngest Lexus dealer of the sixty dealerships that opened nationwide that year. Today Stevinson Lexus along with Stevinson Imports (Jaguar and Porsche) serves the Front Range high-end automobile customer base at prestigious levels of uncompromising sales and service.
In 2001, Stevinson launched several construction projects, including significant upgrades to the Stevinson Imports and Stevinson Toyota East locations. In October 2002, Stevinson broke ground on the new Stevinson Toyota West facility, to be located just south/east of its original location on Indiana. The year 2004 brought even more changes, with the addition of the newest Toyota brand, Scion, to Stevinson Toyota East and Stevinson Toyota West, the Grand Opening of the state of the art Stevinson Toyota West and Scion dealership, and the relocation of Stevinson Chevrolet West to the former Stevinson Toyota West location.
In September 2005, Stevinson began construction on the latest addition to the dealership family - Stevinson Lexus of Frederick. The new Lexus dealership celebrated their grand opening in September 2006.
Many of the Stevinson dealerships have frequently received high recognition and praise for their numerous sales and services achievements. Chuck Stevinson set high standards for both business performance and the fair treatment of customers and employees alike. The Stevinson family will remain committed to these ideals because they are an integral part of our family business history and an important reason for our success.
